"Peter Pan" Creator's Rarely Performed Magical Drama
at STAGEStheatre, Fullerton

You don't need Tinker Bell's fairy dust to see J.M. Barrie's rarely performed whimsical drama because it's flying to SoCal. In "Peter Pan", children who can't grow up escape to Neverland -- in "Dear Brutus", adults who can't grow beyond disappointment escape to an enchanted forest. This "A Midsummer Night's Dream"-inspired play begins at an Agatha Christie-esque dinner party with unhappy lovers and strangers mysteriously invited to a recluse's old mansion. Despite the warnings (because who can resist a keep out sign, eh?), the regret-filled guests explore the wild grove that magically appears. In a garden where second chances grow larger than memories, the pessimists live in their "but, what if" daydreams. This realism-dripping fantasy-turned-fable got its title from Cassius' line in "Julius Caesar", "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in the stars but in ourselves that we are underlings." Ponder the roots of dissatisfaction through this haunting -- and sometimes broadly humorous -- adventure in the woods of Fullerton's STAGEStheatre.

"Hamlet": Murder & Madness in Shakespeare's Greatest Tragedy
at Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB, Long Beach

Without a doubt the most famous play in the English language, "Hamlet" is much more than a collection of quotable lines, like the legendary soliloquy that begins with "To be or not to be?" It's also a thrilling tale of political intrigue, murder, madness and duels to the death. Hamlet is one of theater's greatest anti-heroes, caught between his duty as a son and his desire for moral purity. He's haunted by the rage-filled ghost of his father, who won't rest until his untimely death is avenged. Even worse, every time Hamlet hesitates to take action, it's his friends and loved ones that pay the price. "The New Yorker" calls Aquila Theatre Company's Shakespeare productions "beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect," so you won't want to miss this latest one at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.
