"Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight" -- Portrait of a Female Genius
at Greenhouse Theater Center, Chicago

La Marquise du Châtelet was a woman born in the wrong era. A brilliant mathematician and physicist, she was the toast of the Enlightenment. Nevertheless, she's not a very well known historical figure. Voltaire got it right when he said du Châtelet was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman." Now Lauren Gunderson's play "Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight" resurrects this fascinating personality. Emilie finds herself back in the world of the living, patting her body in surprise and wondering at the reason for her return. She soon becomes desperate to find out whether her challenge to one of Isaac Newton's equations was correct. "I died thinking: Was I right?" she explains. "Shortly followed by: Was I loved? Shortly followed by: Does either one really matter in the end?" This smart, surprising and sexy portrait of a true genius is onstage at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago.

Classic Comedy "King Ubu" Skewers Society's Failures
at Greenhouse Theater Center, Chicago

When it premiered in 1896, Alfred Jarry's outrageous parody of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" was a blast of rude nihilism onto the French theater scene, sticking its tongue out at politics, war and theater orthodoxy. It went on to influence great writers and artists, such as Apollinaire, Artaud and Breton, and led to Surrealism, Dada, the Situationists and even punk rock. Featuring lowbrow humor and ludicrous language, "King Ubu" points out society's failures and injustices and warns about civilization's susceptibility to subversion and collapse through the gluttonous and brutal character of Papa Ubu, who murders the royal family of an immaterial Poland in order to ascend to the throne. Catch this raucous staging of the frighteningly familiar work at Chicago's Greenhouse Theater Center.

With a feisty leading lady and a score full of instantly recognizable songs like "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" and "I Could Have Danced All Night," it's no wonder "My Fair Lady" became a huge Broadway hit and in 1964 was turned into an Oscar-winning film starring Audrey Hepburn. They work for low wages and in harsh conditions at the margins of society with no safety net, no insurance, no protections -- and no guarantee of work tomorrow. Most recently produced at the UK's National Theatre (where it received five stars from "The London Times"), "Beyond Caring" offers a gritty portrait of those who cling precariously to the bottom rung of the ladder. Full of life, humor and tenderness, it sheds light on America's shadow economy, shining an unflinching spotlight on the incendiary intersection of race and class. Re-imagined for Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company by writer/director Alexander Zeldin, "Beyond Caring" lets audiences observe a day in the lives of four temp workers, with a unique staging that allows each audience member to have a distinctive perspective of the action that's unfolding.

at Raven Theatre East Stage, Chicago

If you've never heard of this play by Tennessee Williams, one of the most successful and acclaimed playwrights of the 20th century, there's a very good reason why. "Not About Nightingales", written in 1938, was rejected, then lost until the 1990s, after actress Vanessa Redgrave, having read about the play's existence, made it her personal mission to find it. After its discovery, "Not About Nightingales" was finally produced in London. It then moved to Broadway, where it was nominated for six Tony Awards. "Not About Nightingales" is the story of prison inmates whose miserable conditions and abusive warden lead them to embark on a hunger strike. Now is your chance to see this play, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "The Glass Menagerie" and many more, at the Raven Theatre in Chicago.

Even "The New York Times" says it "may be the greatest of all American musicals." Only an epic this grand could capture the real-life Gypsy Rose Lee, the ultimate stage mother, who groomed her two daughters to be vaudeville stars ... only to watch one of them leave it all behind to become a burlesque star. With a book by Arthur Laurents ("West Side Story"), music by Jule Styne ("Funny Girl") and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim ("Sweeney Todd", "Into the Woods"), this timeless favorite features crowd-pleasing songs like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," "Together Wherever We Go," "Some People," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick" and the show-stopping "Rose's Turn." Slander & the Wall Between Church & State in "Scapegoat"
at The Den Theatre - Main Stage, Chicago

A Chinese proverb says "slander cannot destroy an honest man. When the flood recedes, the rock is there." Sadly, this proverb has been proven false, with such events as the anti-communist Red Scare of the 1910s causing hysteria and accusations that ruined innocent lives and careers. While the Porters have built themselves as a political dynasty, allegations that the patriarch is a Satanist put his dream of being on the Supreme Court in jeopardy. Anse Porter can have the life he's worked for, but only if he sacrifices the people he serves. His loyalty to family, faith, country and self are tested in this twisted story of the Porter family's journey through America's crumbling wall between church and state. "Scapegoat" shines a searing, political light on how our actions against our greatest fears can be worse than the fears themselves at The Den Theatre - Main Stage in Chicago.
