Outdoor Summer Theater With "Macbeth": Shakespeare's Bloody Masterpiece
at Oak Park Festival Theatre in Austin Gardens, Oak Park

Shakespeare in the park. Blankets spread out. Wine and cheese picnics under the stars. Does it get any more blissfully summer than that? Kick off the season at the Oak Park Festival Theatre in Austin Gardens with the bloody and brilliant classic "Macbeth". Nastier than Scorsese at his bleakest, more violent than Tarantino at his bloodiest, Shakespeare's "Macbeth" still shocks like no other tale on the page, stage or screen. Set in a gloomy world of ghosts and witches, the tragedy's cycle of corruption is thrown into motion when the popular King Duncan of Scotland is murdered by his trusted friend and general Macbeth. Driven by a supernatural prophesy and his wife's deadly ambition, Macbeth goes on to claim his destiny. But just as he grasps the crown, it starts to slip through his guilty fingers. Shakespeare's brilliant rumination on ambition and excessive pride proves as timeless -- and timely -- as ever in this "stunningly well-crafted [and] swift-moving" ("The Wednesday Journal") production directed by Barbara Zahora, the Bard's poetry "so deftly and fluidly conveyed that we feel all the dark power in this tight, taut, tragic tale" ("Chicago Reader").

"Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight" -- Portrait of a Female Genius
at Greenhouse Theater Center, Chicago

La Marquise du Châtelet was a woman born in the wrong era. A brilliant mathematician and physicist, she was the toast of the Enlightenment. Nevertheless, she's not a very well known historical figure. Voltaire got it right when he said du Châtelet was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman." Now Lauren Gunderson's play "Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight" resurrects this fascinating personality. Emilie finds herself back in the world of the living, patting her body in surprise and wondering at the reason for her return. She soon becomes desperate to find out whether her challenge to one of Isaac Newton's equations was correct. "I died thinking: Was I right?" she explains. "Shortly followed by: Was I loved? Shortly followed by: Does either one really matter in the end?" This smart, surprising and sexy portrait of a true genius is onstage at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago.

Classic Comedy "King Ubu" Skewers Society's Failures
at Greenhouse Theater Center, Chicago

When it premiered in 1896, Alfred Jarry's outrageous parody of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" was a blast of rude nihilism onto the French theater scene, sticking its tongue out at politics, war and theater orthodoxy. It went on to influence great writers and artists, such as Apollinaire, Artaud and Breton, and led to Surrealism, Dada, the Situationists and even punk rock. Featuring lowbrow humor and ludicrous language, "King Ubu" points out society's failures and injustices and warns about civilization's susceptibility to subversion and collapse through the gluttonous and brutal character of Papa Ubu, who murders the royal family of an immaterial Poland in order to ascend to the throne. Catch this raucous staging of the frighteningly familiar work at Chicago's Greenhouse Theater Center.

at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, Tinley Park

To be dubbed the "Show of the Summer," a concert can't just have any lineup -- it has to feature an electrifying headliner like former Fifth Harmony member/current solo artist Camila Cabello. It also has to have the prodigious acting-singing talent Sabrina Carpenter, whose infectious hit single "Thumbs" is impossible not to jump around to. Then there's Instagram impresario Jacob Sartorius, who scored a hit using his own voice with "Sweatshirt," plus YouTube singer-songwriter sensation Alex Aiono, and the soaring melodies of indie pop trio (and brothers) AJR ("Weak"). Forever In Your Mind kicks off this must-see show at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Tinley Park.

The action starts when 46-year-old Jackie (played by David Gordon) spots 20-something Ginger (played by Sheba) in a Miami deli in 1977. Jackie woos her while also courting Trixie, a gorgeous young Latina, and Rosa, a senior citizen with attitude, which causes Ginger some romantic distress. When Ginger becomes pregnant 10 years later, Jackie denies his paternity -- while still yearning to be with her -- and a complicated relationship begins. Enjoy original songs like "Ode to the Early Bird Special" and "I Never Met This Yenta" which pepper Sheba's major (and majorly hilarious) daddy issues.

"The School for Lies": Freewheeling, Modern Take on Molière Classic
at The Artistic Home, Chicago

Contemporary slang meets 17th-century farce in "The School for Lies". Adapted from Molière's "The Misanthrope", playwright David Ives ("Venus in Fur", "All in the Timing") transforms the French classic into a modern satire told entirely through verse. The result is a delightfully incongruous comedy of manners that lets you peer inside the Parisian salon of Celimene, a young widow with a sharp tongue and plenty of eager suitors. Outrageous gags and vicious couplets strike a hilarious balance of class and crass in this classic collision of Molière's biting satire and Ives's modern wit. See it at The Artistic Home in Chicago.

Character Assassination writes its love letter to Chicago (well, actually, it's more like a "loathe" letter), with "The Roast of Rahm Emanuel". As with every show in this Laugh Factory series, top comedians write and perform in character and in costume, impersonating popular icons with one goal in mind: to tear each other to shreds. This time around, stand-ups Andy Fleming, Tyler Jackson and more will take the stage as famous Windy City figures -- from Oprah Winfrey to Harry Caray to Michael Jordan. Armed with ruthless jabs and white-hot wit, they'll all set their sights on the city's beleaguered mayor Rahm Emmanuel.
